Germany’s Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road) was originally just a marketing scheme when the country was desperate to rebuild its tourism industry during post-war time. It is a beautiful scenic road, which takes you from wine country to the majestic German Alps. Not surprisingly, it’s become wildly popular. Some of the prettiest towns in Germany are scattered along the route, a fact that millions of tourists discover every year.
Adventures on the Romantic Road
In the southern provinces of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the route stretches from Wurzburg in the north to Fussen in the south. It passes through Tauberbischofsheim (a medieval town), Bad Mergentheim (home to a spa), Weikersheim (a former palace) and the three medieval walled towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen, among others. The crowning jewels are the tourist highlights of Neuschwanstein Castle and the Alps.

There are a variety of enchanting accommodations along the route from modern lodgings, small family owned bed and breakfast inns and old world hotels. Imagine yourself in a medieval hotel like this one.
Night Watchman of Rothenburg
One of our favorite experiences on the Romantic Road is in the medieval walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. There is a tour of the town given by the Night Watchman of Rothenburg, Hans Georg Baumgartner. Do not be fooled by imitators. This is the guide we recommend. The Night Watchman takes you back in time as he explains the history of one of the best known and preserved medieval cities in Germany. What makes this tour so entertaining is his dry sense of humor that at the same time, brings the history to life. This tour is really not to be missed and is best done in the evening, when it’s very spooky.
Neuschwanstein Castle on the Romantic Road
Another highlight of the Romantic Road is Neuschwanstein Castle, which was the inspiration to Walt Disney for Cinderella’s Castle at Disneyland. Neuschwanstein Castle was rebuilt by King Ludwig from 1869 to 1880. The beauty and medieval appearance of the castle hides the latest technology of the time. Sadly, King Ludwig only lived in his beautiful castle for two years, before his untimely death in 1886. One of my favorite client stories is when Paul & Pam became engaged on the bridge across the valley from the castle. Talk about romantic!
I recommend that you rent a car and take at least three days to see this area; hopefully more. Just spend time anywhere that appeals to you.
