Have you ever heard of the Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA)? This project began when an English artist named Jason DeCaires Taylor collaborated with Jaime Gonzalez Cano of The National Marine Park and Roberto Diaz, then the President of the Cancun Nautical Association.  Damage was being done to the local reef areas by hurricanes, tropical storms and mankind.  These three experts brainstormed to come up with an idea to submerge life sized statues made from Marine clay in order to promote the growth of coral reef and marine life. The underwater museum Cancun was brought to life, creating an unusual SCUBA diving adventure.

Each underwater sculpture has its own meaning and function.

The Phoenix

Anthropocene

The Phoenix is a beautiful piece of art modeled after a woman to create an angelic looking being. Fan coral was placed on the body to create the wings and they float and move with the motion of the ocean. The Phoenix is the first kinetic sculpture added to the underwater museum Cancun.

The Anthropocene sculpture is obviously cast from a Volkswagen and its design allows for fish and marine life to enter the crevices of the car.  The rounded shape of the car means it can sustain strong currents or tropical storms ensuring a safe place for the creatures that make it their home.  The sculpture weighs 8 tons and contains internal spaces for lobsters and crustaceans.

The underwater museum now consists of three ‘salons’ and includes over 460 statues made by Jason and some other local artists.

There are three ways to see the underwater museum:

  1. Snorkeling, where you can observe the bizarre statues from above.
  2. Submarine. You don’t even have to get wet as you take this magical underwater ride
  3. SCUBA diving for both beginner and advanced divers.

The snorkeling and submarine can be combined for a more complete view at the statues.  The awesome thing about the snorkeling trip is that you can snorkel as much as you like and then catch the next shuttle back to the marina.

Dives to the following statues are available for certified and non-certified divers:

Anthropocene

Silent Evolution

The Banker

Urban Reef

Time Bomb

Bio Map

Bacab
