I just returned from my destination weddings course at Sandals Barbados. I would advise you to wait awhile before visiting.
Why do I say that?
- They are working on their beach to make it more swimmable and calm. To do this, they are building a breakwater, utilizing large, noisy backhoes and trucks.
2/28/16 Update – they are done building the breakwater
- There is currently a kelp problem in Barbados that washes up huge amount of seaweed onto the beaches. Also, as it decomposes it has a pretty stinky smell.
2/28/16 Update – the resort reports that there is no more kelp. They have that problem “under wraps”.
- They are about to begin a large addition to the northeast of the property, which will add two new buildings of rooms. It’s going to have a pool in the skyway connecting one building to another, which will be great when it’s complete.
2/28/16 Update – currently ground work is being done in preparation for the building, which is scheduled to begin soon. This will be a 2 year project, begun in 2015.
Once these things are completed and/or resolved, it is going to be great.
The setting is beautiful and the resort has a very modern, open and sleek look. They have some unique live entertainment options, like a saxophonist who plays near the suites at dusk for some nice ambiance. The restaurants and service is excellent. The staff is very, very friendly.
Sandals Barbados will be an ideal resort for those couples who like to get out and explore the island on their own. There are many shops and restaurants within walking distance. And, there is more infrastructure in Barbados than almost any other Caribbean island, so renting a car or hiring a drivers for the day would be a lot of fun to go see some of the other beautiful beaches, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, Hunte’s Gardens, St. Nicholas Abbey or Harrison’s Cave.
Tip: You’ll see lots of the Barbados Green Monkeys at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, as well as colorful birds, various reptiles and some non-native animals. Be sure to be there by 2 PM, which is feeding time for the Green Monkeys, so they are extremely active.
Things like this are why it’s extremely important to utilize the services of a travel consultant that specializes in romantic vacations for couples; someone who’s been there. I’ve been to all 15 Sandals resorts over the last few years and can help turn your romantic vacation or honeymoon from “I didn’t know there was construction going on.” to “It’s exactly how I imagined”!
