I am a fan of exploring and stumbling onto fun little places. We just get in the car and go; with or without a map. We find our way to something new and different. It’s a fun and spontaneous way to discover. Today’s adventure is an unusual Hawaii Wine Tasting.
When you’re on the Big Island of Hawaii, after you’ve spent some time at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you are going to want to “stumble” onto a little rustic winery close by; Volcano Winery. It was started in 1986 by retired Oahu veterinarian, Lynn “Doc” McKinney. Doc made wine and beer as a hobby for years and dreamed of opening his winery on the Big Island. He chose Volcano for its unusual climate at 4000 feet above sea level.
I live near Temecula Valley Wine Country in Southern California and I can guarantee you that this is unlike any tasting you have ever experienced before. When you try flavors such as Volcano Red, Hawaiian Guava-Grape, Macadamia Nut Honey and Infusion wine, you’ll know that you are drinking something out of the ordinary. Try them all and see what you think. You may even decide to buy a bottle or two of your favorites to bring home.
When you’re done with your wine tasting, amble over to the rustic and charming Kilauea Lodge for a nice meal. Owners, locally raised Lorna and German born Albert Jeyte, an Emmy winning make-up artist, bought the property on their honeymoon in 1986. It’s interesting that both of these unique businesses in the Volcano area share an anniversary.
Request a table by the cozy fireplace. Enjoy their wonderful bread and order the Duck L’Orange and the Mushroom Caps. Finish off your tasty meal with a home-made dessert.
A perfectly relaxing way to spend a day in Hawaii, don’t you agree?
