I’d like to share our romantic Tahiti vacation itinerary with you, so you can get an idea of how long it takes to get from here to there and about the resorts where we’re going to stay.
I’ll be taking lots of pictures, which you can see on Facebook at Carefree Romantic Vacations, if you like! Feel free to ask questions and I’ll do my best to answer. That way, you can sort of go along with us!
We’re actually leaving today out of LAX, flying on Air Tahiti Nui to the Fa’a’a International Airport in the capital city of Papeete on the main island of Tahiti. The flight takes just 8 1/2 hours non-stop. We’ll be arriving kind of late, so we’re staying for one night at four star Le Meridien Tahiti, located along a lagoon on one of the island’s most beautiful, white sandy beaches, before heading to the next island. The resort is only about 15 minutes from the airport and we have a shuttle arranged to take us there.
We’ll have a beautiful view of Moorea from Le Meridien. We’re looking forward to waking up tomorrow and seeing that Sister Island.
Tomorrow, we’ll fly about one hour to the island of Rangiroa, which is the largest atoll in the Tuamotus. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef.
Here, we’re staying at the three and a half star Kia Ora Resort and Spa and it’s only a four minute drive from the airport. It’s ideally located on the north coast between two reef passes outlined by a beautiful lagoon. The resort has 63 bungalows set against the stunning landscape of the coral ring of the atoll. There’s a small grocery store nearby, if we want to get a few things.
One thing I’m looking forward to here is to “shoot the pass”. It’s often called “the world’s greatest adrenaline rush!” We’ll be snorkeling and carried in a rush of water between the ocean and lagoon surrounded by seemingly millions of fish. Divers and glass bottomed boats can also experience this.
We’re staying in Rangiroa two nights then flying to Bora Bora via Tahiti and this takes about three hours. Some days there are direct flights available, which cuts the flying time down to just an hour and fifteen minutes.
Bora Bora is the iconic image of Tahiti that you’re probably imagining; entirely surrounded by a world-famous lagoon with its two green peaks rising like exotic island gods, just waiting to be hiked and explored.
On Bora Bora, we’re staying at the beautiful five-star Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa. Its 120 luxury villas are located on 16 acres of terraced, lush hillside, with a private, protected cove – all with gorgeous lagoon views. We’ll be relaxing on the private white-sand beach and may try sport fishing, shark and string ray feeding, snorkeling, scuba or windsurfing during our stay.
After three romantic nights on Bora Bora, we head to Moorea, just one and a half hours away by plane. Moorea soars out of the ocean in an explosion of green velveteen pinnacles. A wide, but shallow lagoon surrounds the mountains where threads of waterfalls tumble down fern-softened cliffs.
On Moorea the four and a half star Intercontinental Moorea Resort & Spa will be our home for three nights. All of the garden bungalows have their own private plunge pools sheltered from the prevailing winds. There is also a dolphin center and sea turtle clinic on site.
After our stay on Moorea, we get to travel in a boat to the nearby island of Tahiti for our last two nights in paradise. We’ll be met at the pier by the rental car company and pick up the keys to our exploration vehicle. We’ll go check in to the four and a half star, Polynesian-style Intercontinental Tahiti Resort where nothing is taller than the coconut palms.
We’ll have two days here to explore the island, before heading home. What an adventure!
